In recent years, the City of Birmingham has been instituting a number of infrastructure improvement projects as part of their ongoing revitalization program for downtown Birmingham. Due to the addition of Railroad Park and Regions Field, 1st Avenue South between 14th Street and 18th Street has become the backbone between the City of Birmingham’s two most visited attractions.
EDT developed a plan that updated all aspects of 1st Avenue South to match the historic look and feel of Birmingham. The project included the replacement of the existing two lane roadway with a three lane curb and gutter section with on street parking, the addition of sidewalk and pedestrian lighting. Sidewalks were designed with brick pavers and additional hardscaping was included to tie the roadway section to the adjoining park and ball field. In addition to the design services, EDT also provided Construction, Engineering & Inspection (CEI) services on this vital project.
The finished product encourages and accommodates an increase in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic and creates an overall cohesive link between the City’s two greatest attractions.
