DC Water CP Test Station Assessments

Share

DC Water (District of Columbia Water) through Mott MacDonald requested EDT’s assistance to manage the corrosion branch of the water program management team for DC Water. Preparation of technical reports and recommended actions were made to provide the most practical and cost-effective corrosion mitigation solutions. EDT designed cathodic protection (CP) and corrosion control mitigation systems to include CP sacrificial anode systems, design life specifications and drawings as well as reviewed CP deign calculations for water mains. EDT’s NACE certified professionals completed Direct Corrosion Assessments (DCA’s) of the existing water mains that included pipe wall thickness measurements, visual inspections, pitting & graphitization analysis and service life calculations. To accompany the DCA, pipe-environment testing was performed to included DC stray current measurements and in-situ soil resistivity measurements and soil chemistry analysis were performed on soil samples taken at pipe depth. Data from the pipe-environment and DCA’s were then used to determine the risk of potential pipe failures.
