Client: City of Birmingham

Location: Birmingham AL

Residents of the Collegeville Neighborhood were literally "train trapped" - cut off from the Greater Birmingham Community and subject to hazardous transit conditions daily, namely for children and emergency vehicles. The construction of the Shuttlesworth Drive Vehicular-Pedestrian Bridge improved these conditions. The bridge eliminates vehicles from entering the Collegeville Neighborhood and provides a safer route for pedestrians. Engineering Design Technologies, Inc. (EDT) is currently providing construction, engineering and inspection (CEI) for ALDOT and the City of Birmingham on F.L. Shuttlesworth Drive Bridge. The project includes constructing a new bridge over the existing railroad. The five (5) span 365 bridge consists of AASHTO Type-2 Modified Prestressed Concrete Girders and the MSE walls constructed at the approaches to the bridge to minimize impacts to the existing structures. EDT provided comprehensive CEI and construction monitoring for the bridge, approaches and sanitary sewer installation. The overall construction value of the project is $8,500,000 and is approximately 80% complete.
